Le taux de contamination chez les homosexuels hommes dans certains pays africains serait 10 fois plus élevé que chez la population masculine générale, selon une étude de la revue médicale The Lancet. Et, les préjugés notamment conduisent souvent à l’isolement, au harcèlement et à l’absence d’éducation sexuelle. Cette atmosphère toxique de silence et de peur est un terreau parfait pour la propagation du VIH, comme l’a rappelé ce jeudi Elton John dans une interview sur la chaîne de télévision américaine CNBC.
« Si les homosexuels ou bisexuels sont menacés de prison ou de persécution, ils éviteront de se faire tester pour le virus ou de demander à être soignés s’ils sont infectés. La discrimination continue d’être les principales barrières », a insisté la star britannique en annonçant un don de cinq millions de dollars de la part de sa fondation, pour ainsi améliorer l’accès aux traitements contre le VIH en Afrique. « On stigmatise la maladie et marginalise les conditions dans lesquelles ces personnes vivent. Nous devons travailler ce problème à la racine », a t-il encore ajouté.
Ce don sera jumelé par le gouvernement américain, dans le cadre d’une initiative conjointe mise en place depuis 2014. La fondation d’Elton John a déjà aidé à lever plus de 300 millions de dollars pour financer divers programmes de lutte contre le Sida dans plus de 50 pays.

He spoke on Thursday when his foundation, the Elton John Aids Foundation, donated $5m to organisations in sub-Saharan Africa providing support to lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender people suffering from AIDS or HIV.
John and “his husband, David Furnish”, will unveil a new partnership with the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), with the Elton John AIDS Foundation and PEPFAR each contributing $5 million to a fund to increase access to medication for people with HIV and AIDS in countries that are prejudiced toward the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community.
He stated that the stigmatization such persons suffered made others more vulnerable to contracting the disease.
John told CNBC’s Tania Bryer that “We’re seeing an alarming growth in infections amongst these communities [where] we find that LGBT people are stigmatized where they live.
“It stigmatizes the disease and the conditions where they live and so they don’t come out and have HIV tests. They feel nervous about going on the medication, about being labelled or branded as someone with HIV, so we really have to go in and attack the root of the problem and that is the stigmatization and the lack of safe access to treatment and advice and counselling.
“Otherwise, we won’t stop the disease in its tracks,” he stated.
Countries on the African continent have strongly kicked against recognising gayism, with some countries even placing up to 14-year jail sentence on anyone that is gay.
It was reported that the Zimbabwean President, Mr. Robert Mugabe had sarcastically proposed marriage to the United States’ President, Mr. Barrack Obama.
