D’aussi loin qu’ils s’en souviennent, Johan Holmgren et Jakob Bruntse, 42 et 41 ans, ont toujours caressé l’espoir de devenir parents. « Si j’y ai d’abord renoncé en découvrant mon homosexualité, l’amour de Johan m’a redonné confiance », explique Jakob : « Il avait ce même désir de fonder une famille et comptait bien en faire notre réalité. »
Ainsi et après des années de réflexion, inspirés par un couple de leurs amis qui aura eu recours à une mère porteuse, les deux hommes ont opté pour une maternité de substitution. Mais, comme en France, la GPA n’est pas non plus autorisée en Suède, dont ils sont originaires. Johan et Jakob se sont donc orientés vers les États-Unis pour plusieurs mois d’un processus encadré qui leur a permis de rencontrer Alexandra Burns. Déjà maman d’un garçon de 5 ans et d’une fillette de 2 ans, la jeune femme de 24 ans a en effet accepté de porter leur enfant : « C’est un bonheur que je souhaitais leur faire partager. » Et en août dernier, après une première tentative infructueuse, elle a donné naissance à une magnifique petite Ellen, qui a ravi le cœur de ses deux papas.
« Ils ont été merveilleux, prévenants. J’ai insisté pour qu’ils assistent à l’accouchement », a confié Alexandra, qui souligne par ailleurs qu’elle n’est pas la mère biologique, le couple ayant eu recours à un don d’ovocyte. Mais les deux hommes souhaitent rester proches et espèrent que leur petite fille connaitra celle qui l’a mise au monde.
Neuf mois d’intenses émotions immortalisées par la photographe américaine Tammy Schmit, jusqu’au premier cri du bébé, qui a déclenché les larmes de Johan et Jakob.

Pour mémoire, la GPA est prohibée en France, avec des peines pouvant aller jusqu’à deux ans d’emprisonnement et 30.000 euros d’amende. L’Etat a toutefois été de nouveau condamné par la Cour européenne des droits de l’homme (CEDH) en juillet, pour ses réticences à reconnaître la filiation des enfants français, suspectés d’être nés d’une mère porteuse à l’étranger.

« I’ve sort of wanted to become a dad as far back as I can remember, but I almost gave up the dream when I realized that I was gay, » Bruntse wrote in an e-mail to The Huffington Post. « Fortunately, I fell in love with Johan who didn’t only share my dream; he was determined to make it come true. »
The couple eventually settled on a plan of building their family by using a surrogate. They worked with an agency in the United States, as surrogacy is discouraged in their home country of Sweden. After a year-long search to find their perfect match ― Alexandra Burns, 24 ― followed by a devastating miscarriage, the thrilled fathers finally welcomed their baby girl, Ellen, into the world last month.
Kansas-based birth and family photographer Tammy Schmit of Little Leapling Photography was on hand for the birth (as well as pregnancy and newborn sessions), and the emotional images she captured are proof that there are many ways to become a family. Congrats, all!
Johan (right): We talked loosely about becoming parents for years, but we really started getting serious about our options about five years ago. A couple we are friends with had two babies with a surrogate in the United States, which inspired us.
Jakob (left): We contacted an agency that helped connect us with our wonderful surrogate. It took almost a year to get the perfect match. She is not the biological mother. We used an egg donor from Kentucky. We now know her well, and keep in touch.
Alexandra: Johan and Jakob were wonderful. They were trying to make sure I was comfortable, but I told them that of course they should be in the room and close to me. There was no way I was not going to have them in there while I had their baby.
Jakob: We have experienced such openness and kindness here. I’m already looking forward to traveling back here with our daughter when she’s older to visit the woman who carried her for nine months.
