Le 9 janvier dernier, Fatima Taleb, 39 ans, conseillère communale d’origine marocaine de la ville de Badalona en Catalogne, a officié la cérémonie d’un mariage entre deux hommes.
Largement commentée, et considérée pour beaucoup comme un bel exemple d’ouverture d’esprit et un moyen d’ancrer des valeurs de respect et de tolérance entre les citoyens malgré leurs différences, la photo de l’élue, femme musulmane et voilée, avec les jeunes mariés a fait le tour des réseaux.
La romancière marocaine, Laila Lalami, qui vit aux Etats-Unis depuis plus d’une quinzaine d’années, a également partagé l’image, en taclant pour l’occasion Kim Davis, la greffière du Kentucky, qui avait passé cinq jours en prison pour avoir refusé de délivrer des certificats de mariage aux conjoints de même sexe, invoquant « l’autorité de Dieu ». Elle est d’ailleurs rapidement devenue la coqueluche de la droite religieuse au pays.

Fatima Taleb est arrivée en Espagne à l’âge de 22 ans pour finir ses études en lettres modernes. Elle a intégré ensuite la fédération des associations culturelles et éducatives de Barcelone. Dans une interview accordée au titre de presse El Pais en mai 2015, la femme politique affiliée au parti Podemos a affirmé qu’elle avait pour objectif de « démanteler les mythes et les idées reçues sur les musulmans en Espagne ».
Ses détracteurs non musulmans lui reprochent le foulard, pour les religieux, c’est une infidèle :
« Nous avons besoin d’un air plus sain, épuré du racisme, un air sans xénophobie et sans discrimination. Nous avons besoin d’une société diversifiée et inclusive envers toutes les communautés, sans exception. Si vous n’apprenez pas à découvrir vos voisins, vous allez disparaître, englué dans les rumeurs et stéréotypes, qui circuleront également à votre propos. Il faut s’ouvrir aux autres cultures, pensées et religions… C’est ensemble que nous pourrons faire tomber les remparts et changer les choses… »

An image of Taleb dressed in hijab, next to the newlywed couple at the city town hall has made the rounds on social media networks stirring outrage and receiving all kinds of comments.
Fátima Taleb, 39, is the first ever Muslim woman to be elected councilor in Guanyem Badalona, in eastern Catalonia, Spain, according to Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia.
Some Twitter users have described the wedding as an “incredible example” of the “spirit of tolerance,” democracy and respect, while others have criticized Taleb’s actions as a “disgrace for a Muslim.”
Moroccan American writer Laila Lalami posted the picture on her Twitter account with a caption referring to U.S. county clerk of Rowan County, Kim Davis, who refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses citing “God’s authority,” despite the Supreme Court’s decision.

The Moroccan born Muslim tried to allegedly prove that one can be a follower of Islam and at the same time marrying two men and sharing the image worldwide.
Taleb was born in Morocco and arrived in Badalona at the age of 22. She holds a degree in Modern Literature from Morocco.
According to the same source, her political career in Spain started when she began volunteering in municipal initiatives in favor of the social inclusion of immigrants.
Fátima’s ideals of unity and tolerance for everyone were a key factor in her election, putting an end to former Badalona Mayor Xavier García Albiol’s policies.
“We need to breathe clean air, without racism, without xenophobia and discrimination, we need a diverse society that includes all groups without exception”, she argued in her candidature.
The 39-year-old Muslim who was elected councilor on June 13, 2015 touched on the importance of having an open-mind and debunking myths.
“If you do not know your neighbor, you believe all the rumors and stereotypes that circulate about it. If you approach them, you talk to them, you know their culture, their thinking and their religion, you can break down barriers,” Taleb told Spain’s El País.
According to several Spanish media sources, the officiation of the same-sex marriage in Badalona are a symbol of the “drastic” changes that are taking place in this Spanish region since May 2015.
