Austin Wallis, un étudiant texan qui affichait ouvertement son homosexualité sur les réseaux sociaux depuis 2014, a été renvoyé de son établissement le mois dernier, une école privée luthérienne, pour avoir refusé d’effacer des vidéos qu’il avait publié sur sa chaîne YouTube dans lesquelles il s’affichait avec son petit ami.
Dénoncé par une « âme bienveillante », le principal de son école ne lui a laissé aucun choix, le sommant de supprimer ses vidéos sous peine d’expulsion. Refusant l’ultimatum, le jeune homme de 17 ans a été renvoyé.
Dans sa dernière vidéo, très ému, Austin déplore que son orientation sexuelle ait pu « inciter » son exclusion : « En publiant mes vidéos, je me disais bien que j’allais forcément me faire harceler par certains, mais certainement pas par ces mêmes adultes sensés me protéger, sans avoir à supporter les intimidations ».
L’établissement s’est défendu, en indiquant que les élèves souscrivaient une « clause morale » stipulant que l’école « se réservait le droit discrétionnaire de mettre un terme à leur scolarisation dans le cas où ils feraient promotion de la pornographie, l’immoralité sexuelle, l’activité homosexuelle ou bisexuelle ».

The 17-year-old student opens up about it in the devastating video below, which currently has over 300,000 views.
“I was called to the principal, and he said that he had found out that I was gay, and that I was openly gay, and basically he said that, you know, ‘I’m gonna call your parents, they’re gonna get involved,’” Austin explains. “So the next day, my mom came in with me, and he basically told me that..I had to go back into the closet to stay at the school. And I could never be involved in another video, or do anything that mattered, which is really hard for me, because this YouTube channel means the world to me.”
Thankfully, Austin did find a new school to attend, but the entire situation has understandably left a lasting impression.
“I think it’s ridiculous that, in this day and age, you can be excluded from your own school for being gay,” Austin said. “When I came out, I knew I was going to have bullies. But I never expected it to be from the people who are supposed to protect you from the bullies, who are supposed to try to stop that.”
